Lawns from one type of grass are created quite rarely and rather on an amateur scale. For the establishment of lawns in green areas, mixtures of grass seeds of various species or varieties are most often used. The use of mixtures of grasses results from the need to supplement the deficiencies of one species with the introduction of another, for none of the known species of grass has all the characteristics, which can ensure the appearance and durability of the lawn. For example, alongside grass that requires normal soil moisture, a drought-tolerant species is introduced, which protects the lawn and ensures its nice appearance in the dry period. In addition to grasses that have a vivid green color, a trampling-resistant variety is introduced to the pitches, which protects, lawn against mechanical destruction of plants. There are many such dependencies and connections; all the more, the more functions the lawn performs and the more local conditions deviate from optimal, required by most grass plants. The introduction and use of mixtures of various grasses largely protects lawns against the effects of unfavorable soil conditions, climatic, neglect of care, or the way the lawn is used contrary to its intended purpose.
The usefulness of the more important species of grass under certain conditions can be assessed on the basis of the data contained in the table.
