Ornamental grasses – Fashionable, Beautiful, undemanding

Ornamental grasses are a very interesting group of plants, which has recently become more and more fashionable both in home gardens, as well as public greenery. They owe their attractiveness to grasses to the richness of forms and colors, generally easy to grow and have little to do, rapid growth and the ability to create very interesting and original compositions from them in combination with other plants.

Ornamental grasses bring a lot of dynamics to the garden ,impression of lightness and transience. This group of plants will work well both in garden assumptions of a Japanese nature, as well as in the gardens in the English style, or rural. Ornamental grasses are suitable for composition over water, on the moors, for colorful compositions with deciduous plants, or conifers. Tall grass varieties can replace hedges, in turn, low species forming stolons can be used to tear slopes. So if we start designing and setting up a backyard garden, let's think about, is it not worth finding a place in it just for ornamental grasses. Below are some popular species of ornamental grasses, which certainly works well in gardens in the climatic conditions of Rzeszów and the surrounding area:

  • Chinese Miscanthus – depending on the variety medium high, or tall grass(reaches from 0,6 do 2,5 m in height) , whose decoration are both dense leaves, but also appearing in late summer and autumn beautiful, fluffy inflorescences. Particularly interesting and recommendable varieties are Zembrinus and Strictus with yellow striped leaves, silver feather, Rotsibler, Karl Foester with very impressive inflorescences or Morning ligh with beautiful, delicate leaves. Varieties of Chinese Miscanthus are sensationally suitable for the shores of water bodies, for mixed, colorful compositions and for minimalist gardens in a modern style.
  • Giant Miscanthus – a species of very tall grass – the Giganteus variety reaches up to 3.5 m in height. This species is suitable for composition with other large plants, as a cover for unattractive elements in the garden, or even a hedge and for composition over larger bodies of water.
  • Daredevil turf – medium-tall species (reaches ok. 1-1,2 m in height), whose decoration is beautiful, delicate inflorescences, that adorn the plant throughout the summer. Perfect for water and naturalistic assumptions, which gives light, airy character. An interesting variety of this species is the Goldtau variety.
  • Fescue sina – compact, low grass forming dense clumps of height ok. 30cm. Plant with a sino-blue leaf color, the intensity of which depends on the variety. Has very low soil and moisture requirements. Irreplaceable on the moors, in rock gardens and compositions with miniature conifers.
  • Japanese weed – medium-sized grass forming compact clumps, whose greatest decoration are very numerous appearing in autumn, Delicate, inflorescences in the form of Klosów. Rozplenica has a lot of varieties, unfortunately, not all of them winter well in the conditions of Rzeszów (do not winter, among others. red-leaf varieties). It is worth planting this grass in all sorts of compositions, above the pond, on the moor, or in a rock garden.
  • Crested spartyna- tall grass exceeding 1.5m in height with a nice cascading habit, which owes to the leaves scrolling to the sides. Grass with very low soil requirements. It looks great above the water and in varied, colorful compositions. A very nice variety of this species is the Auromarginata variety with striped, yellow-green leaves.
