Lawn what you need to know before we start it.
Big, equal, an intensely green lawn is certainly the basic element of any beautiful garden and a showcase of its owner. Unfortunately, setting up a perfect lawn is, contrary to appearances, a difficult issue and requires careful consideration. Before we start establishing our home turf, we need to make a few decisions and be aware of certain factors, which will decide about your success, or failure. Here are the most important of them.
Important decisions first
You need to start setting up a lawn with a few decisions. We have to consider what the lawn will be for, how big should it be, what shape and how much time will we be able to devote to it.
Home lawns generally fulfill two functions - decorative and recreational. Decorative lawn is established from mixtures of grasses that create a particularly impressive turf. Unfortunately, such lawns are sensitive to trampling and require careful care, regular mowing and watering. On the other hand, recreational lawns are established from mixtures of grasses with lower requirements that tolerate trampling well. The recreational lawn works well in the part of the garden where we will spend our free time, where you will need a playground for children, or a running area for a dog.
The fact is not without significance for the decision about the form of our future lawn, that the lawn needs regular care: mowing, watering, fertilization and many other activities. Amount of time, which we will devote to individual maintenance works on the lawn depends on its size, but also the topography, on which it was founded. The rule is simple - even quite large lawn surfaces are not difficult to maintain, provided, that it is equal, and its edges form a fairly regular shape. The lawns are highly fragmented, narrow, with numerous nooks and crannies are difficult to maintain, because you have to spend a lot of time, for example, to trim places with the manual brushcutter, which there is no way to get to with a trolley mower, or to align the "whiskers" left by the mower on larger bends of the terrain. Therefore, it is worth considering the issues of its future maintenance before starting the establishment of a lawn, so that it would not be a big problem for us sometime.
Preparatory work
The next stage, which should be mentioned before setting up a lawn is site preparation. In order to enjoy a beautiful lawn, it is necessary to perform a number of heavy and time-consuming works before setting it up. The area should be leveled and, if necessary, drained, destroy perennial weeds, spread mole nets, distribute the irrigation system pipes, bring back fertile land. Only on such prepared ground can you think about setting up a lawn. All of the aforementioned works should not be underestimated, because if mistakes are made at this stage, it will have fatal consequences in the future.
Lawn from sowing, or from a roll
One of the most important questions before setting up a lawn is how it will be set up. There are two solutions - sowed lawn, or a lawn laid out of ready-made turf. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each solution? The advantage of a rolled lawn is certainly its quick effect - dense after spreading the turf, the beautiful lawn is almost ready. The disadvantage of this solution is the price of the material - a rolled lawn is at least three times more expensive than a sowing lawn, and in the case of a large garden, it may turn out, that the cost of its establishment is very high. The advantage of a sowing lawn is the much lower cost of setting it up. The disadvantage of a sown lawn is the fact, that after its installation, it is not yet fully ready - it takes at least a few months, that the lawn reaches full turf. Another handicap with sowing lawn is this, that when setting up such a lawn, the period should be appropriately moist and warm, so that the grass can sprout quickly. The right time for planting lawns by sowing is limited to the period from the end of April to the end of September.
