Garden on slopes

Garden on slopes

In the vicinity of Rzeszów, many new houses are being built in hilly terrain, on sloping plots. A plot with a varied terrain gives great opportunities for an interesting arrangement of the garden, but it is also an obstacle when building a house. The need to create a shelf in the field, on which the building is associated with the creation of more or less steep slopes in the garden. Often, after the completion of the construction, it is not entirely clear how to develop them.

How to develop slopes?

On slopes with a slight slope you can set up a lawn – it is very important in this case that the slope of the terrain is not too large, allowing the mower to ride freely. With steeper slopes, it is worth thinking about planting them with trees and shrubs, because mowing the lawn will be problematic in this case. In turn, very steep slopes must be planted with deep and strongly rooted trees and shrubs, and often there is a need to strengthen the base of the slope with a retaining wall.

Very long slopes should be divided into smaller ones, separated by flat lawn surfaces. – A two-storey garden will then be built of terraces separated by lush compositions of plants. Not a bad idea, there is also strengthening of slopes with boulders – in this way we can create a spectacular rock garden. Yet another interesting way to arrange the garden, is the reinforcement of slopes with stone walls, gambions, or gazons, possibly concrete palisades. The resulting flat shelves can be filled with low, littering plants, which over time will begin to effectively hang through the walls.

We choose plants for slopes

Slopes are best covered with a dense carpet of ground cover plants. Species and varieties we have a whole bunch to choose from, but depending on the light conditions, not all of them will work. The following list shows the popular, effective and easy to maintain plants, which are worth covering the slopes in full sun and in the shade.

Well lit slopes:

  • species and varieties of laying junipers (np. Golden carpet, Blue chip, Willton), scaly (np. Blue carpet), Intermediate (np. Old gold, Gold coast, Pfizeriana aurea, Gold star, Mordigan gold), sent out (np. Nana), Chinese, Sabin and coastal.
  • horizontal irga and Dammer's irga (in the climatic conditions of the vicinity of Rzeszów may freeze)
  • some varieties of Thunberg barberry, e.g.. Green carpet
  • mountain pine
  • ground cover roses, eg. variety Fairy
  • Fortunea cultivars

Slopes in the shade:

  • horizontal irga and Dammer's irga
  • common ivy
  • Japanese runianka
  • periwinkle common and larger
  • bent tawulec
  • laying varieties of common yew

Cover crops should be planted in larger groups, which over time will merge into uniform lobes. Such lobes differing in color, Invoice, or height is worth mixing with each other, as a result, an interesting composition will be created In addition, it is worth diversifying the surfaces occupied by ground cover plants and planting others between them, taller plants. There are many possibilities of interesting arrangement of slopes in the garden – just run your imagination.
