The neighborhood of the lawn

The neighborhood of the lawn. Getting a good lawn under certain conditions can be very difficult. For example, large trees with a shallow root system or trees with strong shade in the vicinity of the lawn are always competitors that threaten the lawn.. Some shrubs may create similar competition, and even perennials, and its object is the taking of water, nutrients and light. In the vicinity of such plants, the lawn surface is usually inferior, unless very careful care is carried out in these places, mainly watering and fertilizing. In heavily shaded areas, it is better to use a different type of plant cover, suitable for such conditions.

Road surfaces cause slightly different problems, tree trunks and other vertical elements bordering the lawn surface. Due to the great difficulty of mowing the lawn without special equipment, an unsown strip of width should be kept right next to the edge of the surface 10-15 cm adjacent to the edge. The width of this strip can be changed depending on the type of mower you have.

Wymagane odległości brzegu trawnika: a) from the surface, b) from tree trunks, c) from the walls.

The soil area of the lawn in the vicinity of roads should be lower by 3-5 cm in relation to their surface. This makes it possible to mow the lawn in the plane of the roads, which is desirable for aesthetic reasons and facilitates the drainage of rainwater from the surface.

Cutting grass that grows next to tree trunks is technically difficult, in addition, operating mowers exposes trees to damage to the bark. Therefore, it is recommended to keep clean soil surfaces at a distance of at least 20-30 cm from tree trunks, the base of the branches of the bushes. These surfaces can also be left much larger and covered with various materials, np. with peat or gravel. It is even necessary in the first years after planting trees or shrubs. Planting trees and shrubs on. of the lawn surface, however, is often inadvisable for aesthetic reasons or due to the inability to provide them with appropriate cultivation and care conditions in such an environment.

Difficulties in mowing lawns also occur in places, where they come to different vertical elements, like garden walls, poles, walls etc.. In such places it is also necessary to maintain an unsown strip width 10- 15 cm. Sometimes the foundation can be extended to this width, stabilize (harden) soil with lime or cement, etc.. This prevents weeds from overgrowing the soil, which in such places most often have to be removed manually.
