The division and classification of lawns can be made on the basis of various criteria, such as aesthetic value, plant species composition, method of use and care. The most common is the division of lawns into: garden, park, special and turf.
Garden lawns are often called carpet lawns. These are lawns of the highest quality in terms of aesthetics, smooth, vivid green and, thanks to frequent mowing, resemble carpets, these lawns can be established in various conditions, by making an appropriate selection of grass species. Usually, three or four species of grass are used to set up garden lawns, the species composition cannot be changed by proper and regular care..
Park lawns. These are lawns of an intermediate type between garden and natural meadows. They have different aesthetic values, because they are mowed less often, the composition of the plants that compose them includes many non-grass species. These lawns can be established under many different conditions, only seeds of such species of grasses and other plants are sown, to play a pioneering role. In -later years after the establishment of such lawns, the composition of plants changes and is established as a result of natural consequences consistent with the local habitat conditions. The quality and frequency of maintenance treatments may change the species composition of plants and the aesthetic value of the lawn.
Special lawns. It is a fairly large group, including mainly grass surfaces used in various sports facilities. These are mostly grass pitches for practicing various sports. The requirements for this group of lawns are numerous and high: they should have the characteristics of garden lawns, and at the same time show high resistance to mechanical factors, like crushing, abrasion, breaking up, etc.. Therefore, when establishing such lawns, it is necessary to carefully select the species of grass, and after putting them on, look after them very carefully, depending on the destination, manner and frequency of use. Special lawns are set up on a very carefully prepared substrate, both in terms of conditions for plants, and durability of the smooth surface of the lawn soil. Very often such lawns are equipped with various underground devices that regulate humidity, air access, and even temperature.
Turfs are dog's surface coverings’ soil with low plants. They are used under such conditions, where getting a lawn is faced with various difficulties; for example, surfaces with steep slopes, places with difficult soil conditions, strongly shaded, exposed to water erosion.
However, turf areas do not form the lawn; they are therefore an intermediate form between lawns and many different forms of plant use. Due to the variety of plants used for this;o the type of soil surface coating, turf spots can have high decorative value. Very often, various garden plants are used for this purpose, carpet and turf. The grasslands include replacement lawns, usually made of non-grassy plants.
