Grass plants make up a huge family of over 10 000 species. In Poland, there are approx 190 grass species, of which only a dozen are used for establishing lawns. At the same time, there is a tendency to limit the number of species and the improvement of their various varieties, as well as the increasing use of various ecotypes. The number of grass species used is therefore small, that quite numerous and high demands are placed on the grasses used to establish lawns, and only a few species of grass meet these requirements. The most important features that determine the suitability of a given type of grass for establishing a lawn are:

— niewielka wysokość,
— powolne odrastanie pionowe (after mowing),
— długi okres wegetacji,
- vivid green color of the leaves,
— evergreen foliage,
— długowieczność,
— niewielkie wymagania pokarmowe,
— odporność na okresową suszę,
— odporność na nadmierną okresową wilgotność gleby,.
— odporność na niskie temperatury,
— odporność na choroby,
— odporność na zanieczyszczenie powietrza, shade resistance,
— odporność na deptanie.
Of course, there is no such type of grass, which would have all of the required characteristics. Certain species, however, meet the conditions to a satisfactory degree, and this determines their frequent use. Do najważniejszych i najczęściej stosowanych należy zaliczyć dziewięć gatunków traw.
