Planting hedges is planting shrubs, less often trees, one in a compact system- or multi-row. Planting intervals depend on the type of plants to be planted, the intended manner of hedging, soil type, etc.. amount 20-50 cm.
If a hedge of large shrubs or small trees is established, these intervals may be as high as 60 – 80 cm. Putting up a hedge, great attention should be paid to the cleanliness of the soil. Not, bushes should be planted in places infested with permanent weeds, like couch, ground elder. itp. It is often completely impossible to control such weeds after a hedge has been planted, and their presence not only weakens the young plants of the hedge, but also reduces its decorative value.
The technique of planting plants that form a hedge is not much different from planting shrubs: without a lump or with a root ball. The easiest, and at the same time the least time-consuming method is planting bushes along the stretched rope in the gap made with a shovel. You can plant the second and third rows, shifting the cord accordingly. The application of the described method is very convenient in well-cultivated and loose soil and in the case of planting small shrubs propagated by sowing. Such shrubs are usually long, parallel arranged roots. Too long roots should be trimmed.
Planting should be carried out by two people. One of them sticks with a shovel and lifts the ground, the other puts on bushes and steps on the ground.
If the bushes have a more extensive root system, or if the soil is not too deeply tilled or heavy, it is necessary to plant plants in oblong pits, i.e. ditches. When digging a trench, it is important to keep the edge of the trench even, because bushes will be planted along these lines. When planting one row, the plants can be placed along one edge or in the center of the ditch. When planting plants in two rows, they are placed alternately along the two edges. This is called "three" planting. Three-row hedges are rarely used, mainly due to the difficulty of weeding them. The third row is obtained by planting two plants facing each other at the same time, next to the walls, and a third in the middle of the ditch halfway away. Such planting is called "high five" planting. Two people are always required for planting in ditches, while the "five" planting is carried out very quickly and comfortably by three people, if two people are holding bushes, and the third covers the ditch.
