Shutters, which can be used to cover windows and doors is a classic method of protection against interference from the outside and is profitable, when we take care of the execution ourselves.
There are several reasons for this, for which it is worth equipping windows with shutters. They are a good cover from the prying and too strong sun. They also protect against heat loss from the rooms, and the facade decorated with them gets a more interesting look. Lockable shutters are not mass-produced in standard sizes. They have to be made on an individual order, what makes, that they are correspondingly more expensive. We can save a lot, if we reach for the saw and the glue can ourselves. The shutters shown here have been equipped with solid sashes with a frame structure, covering the panels. The material needed for their construction can be purchased in wood yards or DIY stores.
We will make the frames of spruce boards, connected at the corners with an overlap, and the panels are made of waterproof plywood (AW 100). The inner border is made of boards with a width 10 cm, external and – wide on 8 cm. The panels are inserted into the resulting groove and fastened with the so-called quarter rounds. Cassettes on the panels, also made of plywood, they diversify the monotonous surfaces of the wings.
T-shaped or L-shaped hinges are attached to the shutters. The hinge hooks can be screwed to the wall, screw into wall plugs or embedded in them.
The best protection of windows against noise, solid shutters are cold and sunny. Panels made of grills or slats do not fulfill this role so well.
Rigid shutter fittings are produced in a variety of sizes and shapes. You can buy them in DIY stores and hardware stores.
Shutters are exposed to various weather conditions, therefore their wooden elements must be covered with a layer that protects them against moisture. Connections made with ordinary carpentry glue will not resist moisture and changing air temperatures. That is why you have to use special wood adhesives, marked as "waterproof".
