Lawn sowing late summer or early autumn

The late summer or early autumn period is generally considered to be more favorable to the establishment of lawns. During this period, favorable conditions for the germination of seeds prevail much more often and longer. In addition, for the arrival of this period, the soil can be prepared much better, because all cultivation treatments can be performed in the best soil moisture conditions. For only light soils, permeable or partially prepared in the previous year can be quickly prepared in the spring season. The early-autumn period is also more appropriate when more complex drainage works are carried out or when a special ground is prepared for the lawn..

Sowing grasses and their mixtures can be done until the end of August. Until mid-September, only mixtures with a high content of perennial ryegrass can be sown. However, it is a period, in which frosts may already occur, and there is often drought too. Therefore, late sowing should be done very carefully (covering the seeds well) and ensure the lawn is watered in the event of drought. Grasses sown in the second half of September or later may partially sprout, however, their development is so weak, that most of the plants die in winter.
